Inspiration

While studying history, philosophy, and the history of philosophy, I found learning about the chronological relation of events or ideas to be very helpful in building my understanding of how/why they came to be. While studying phenomenology and Gadamer's Historically Effected and Effective Consciousness, I learned just how important it really is to have an understanding of ourselves within the context of time.

What it does

Timelines allows the user to learn about anything in it's historical context, by generating a timeline of events relevant to the user's search parameters. This enables learners to achieve a better grasp of a topic or an event, by providing a tool that can widen the scope of their inquiry, and forges stronger connections in their understanding.

You can generate a timeline, edit it's contents, adjust the visual styling and export it as an image to use in your own learning materials or in a presentation.

How we built it

Built in React, using Observable Plot and D3, MySQL for the database.

Challenges we ran into

Learning new libraries while on a busy schedule was a challenge. We ran into issues with installing our database on another computer and of course Git conflicts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Incorporating rate limiting in our backend to help protect against potential spam attempts Successful collaboration with other developers.

This was a complicated project that we had doubts we'd be able to realize, but we are very proud that we were able to get it working as well as it is and the great response already received from those we've shared it with.

What we learned

We learned that we don't have to get all big features implemented, the MVP is enough on a time-constraint.

What's next for Timelines

Expanding it's functionality and useability as a powerful learning tool.
