TimeBox: A Musical Time Capsule

Inspiration

I wanted to create an app that makes music feel personal again—not just another algorithm. The theme "Timeless Moments Await" sparked the idea of a music box that bridges:

  • Past: Rediscovering forgotten favorites
  • Present: Daily songs from friends + new discoveries worldwide
  • Future: Musical gifts to your future self

What It Does

A minimalist music box delivering 10 daily songs:

  • Friends Curate 3 slots, strangers/curators fill the rest
  • Time Capsules: Save songs for future months (nostalgic surprises!)
  • Global Jukebox: Explore random songs from users worldwide

How I Built It

  • Tool: Figma (first-time user!)
  • Process:
    1. Paper wireframes to map the flow
    2. Pixel-perfect screens designed from scratch
    3. Interactive prototype with "music box" animations

Challenges I Faced

  • Figma First-Timer:
    • Battled layers vs frames (RIP my undo button)
    • Pivoted from complex icons to clean minimalism
  • Scope Management:
    • Shelved dark/light mode for V1
    • Banked 20+ ideas for future updates

Accomplishments I am proud of

  • Solo Success: From Figma newbie to functional prototype
  • Restraint: Kept core experience focused and polished
  • Delight Factor: That satisfying music box lid interaction

Lessons Learned

  • Figma 101: Naming conventions save lives
  • Prioritization: Done > perfect; V1 > feature creep

What's Next + Future Features

  • Time Themes: Vintage (past), minimalist (present), holographic (future)
  • Voice Notes: Personal song dedications
  • Group Capsules: Shared musical time capsules for special moments or trips

Time Box: unlock time, one melody at a time. ♪
