Inspiration The journey began in December 2025 after listening to a podcast where the guest discussed shifting from tracking finances to tracking "time." This sparked a realization: Time is a currency. As an independent developer who spent the past year working on various projects, I realized I lacked a clear understanding of how my time was actually distributed. I felt an immediate need to start "time ledgering" to reclaim control over my most valuable asset.
What it does TimeKeeping is a minimalist time-tracking tool (MVP) designed for speed and clarity. It is built on three core principles:
High-Speed Logging: Start tracking any activity or task with a single click—no complex setup or prior categorization required. Custom Dimensions: Users have full control over how their data is categorized and visualized. You can define your own dimensions (e.g., project name, activity type) and customize the colors for your dashboard charts. Retroactive Entry: Forgot to click start or end? The app supports easy post-recording and editing to ensure your time ledger remains accurate. How we built it TimeKeeping was developed as a modern, high-performance web application (available at https://timekeeping.click/). The technical implementation focused on a seamless user experience:
Tech Stack: Built using Next.js and TypeScript for a robust, responsive, and type-safe frontend. Aesthetics & UX: Designed with a premium, modern feel, featuring dynamic charts and intuitive controls for both desktop and mobile users. SEO & i18n: Optimized for global reach with built-in English and Chinese language support. Zero-Friction Access: Designed to be usable immediately without registration, with optional Google account integration for cross-device data synchronization. Challenges we ran into Most existing time-tracking software is either too focused on "To-Do" lists or designed for employer-employee supervision. As an independent developer, the challenge was to create a tool that felt personal and frictionless—one that encourages self-awareness rather than adding a management burden. We had to carefully strip away unnecessary features to keep the experience "pure."
Accomplishments that we're proud of We successfully launched a "pure" MVP that effectively implements the "Time as an Asset" philosophy. The tool provides a clean, distraction-free environment that helps users regain control of their time in an era of information overload.
What we learned The project reinforced the value of minimizing friction in utility tools. We learned that for a habit like time tracking to stick, the barrier to entry must be virtually non-existent. We also deepened our understanding of "time assetization" and how visualizing time can fundamentally change one's relationship with daily work.
What's next for TimeKeeping While currently an MVP, TimeKeeping is a living project. We are actively seeking community feedback to refine the experience. Future updates will focus on enhancing the custom categorization features and dashboard analytics, all while staying committed to the platform's core principle of simplicity.
