Inspiration
I wanted to build a complete application using Kotlin as the programming language for both the server and client sides.
What It Does
The app helps you schedule training sessions with your coach without needing to meet in person. It also helps trainees view other available time slots if a session needs to be rescheduled.
How I Built It
I chose Kotlin because it’s my primary programming language. On the client side, I built an Android app ready for the Play Store. On the backend, I fortunately had Ktor to build the server side.
Challenges I Ran Into
My main role in the industry is Android development, but I’m always looking for a challenge. I believe Kotlin has evolved to the point where we can build practically anything with it nowadays. On the server side, I often wasn't sure if I was making the right decisions. However, after extensive research and reading through documentation, I built a backend that works well and handles problems efficiently.
Accomplishments That I'm Proud Of
In theory, setting up a Firebase Notification server looks easy on paper. That was the trap!
Implementing the legacy system is straightforward, but setting up the new one is a different story. At one point, I almost dropped the feature to add it later, but after many attempts and deep dives into the documentation, I finally figured out what was missing.
What I Learned
It was a great challenge to test my limits. I know this isn't YouTube 2.0, but it solves a real problem I personally face and of course, it runs on my own code! I'm proud that, as a solo Android developer, I was able to build a full-stack application entirely in Kotlin.
What's Next for TheMeetingApplication
The core feature set is now implemented, but I have many ideas I want to build even after the hackathon ends. Let’s see where this project goes!
Also somebody will really read all this?
