Explore Old Hong Kong
Inspiration
One of our members lived close to a newly renovated marketplace called the "Central Market." In there, he saw a big timeline of the marketplace from its beginning in the 1900s till now. It gave him a chance to explore the story of the people in a different time period, standing in the same exact location. This sparked an interest in us to do the same for the rest of the city as we realized that there were too many of these interesting stories that went unnoticed and soon forgotten.
What it does
This project allows people from anywhere in the world to access the history of the desired location in Hong Kong. When a location is pressed on the Hong Kong map, the audience is given a description and an image of the place 100 years ago and how it has developed into what it is now.
How we built it
We built it by first researching through the internet and sometimes physically meeting up and going to the desired location. With all those knowledge, we were able to transfer these researches into a product through CSS, HTML, and JS.
Challenges we ran into
Although we love Hong Kong a lot, we have never been to all the historical places before and many were unknown to us. Therefore, we had some difficulties researching many places as we knew so little. This was even worse because we had an even more limited amount of time due to how we lived in a different timezone from this hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to share the grand history of our beloved home with everyone around the globe. Tourists only tend to look at the current looks of a place. Therefore, the different battles and stories behind each location go unshared. Therefore, we are proud that this project gave more detailed attention to those stories and share it with more people.
What we learned
We have lived in Hong Kong for several years now. However, as students, we regularly dismissed the astonishing sites around us as we are busy with our lives. We never cared to fully appreciate this wonderful city. Therefore, this project gave us a chance to pause and learn more about the history of where we are literally standing right now. Consequently, we were given a chance to appreciate the hard work of our predecessors who gifted us with such a beautiful view that we have dismissed before.
What's next for Time Machine to the Old Hong Kong
We wish to add more locations and even more detailed descriptions for each place. In addition, due to COVID 19, traveling is very difficult nowadays. Therefore, we wish to add sound clips or videos for each location so that people outside of Hong Kong can easily imagine and access each place.
