Inspiration
ChronoSim was inspired by the traditional idea of a time machine: a device that lets you walk through the past and the future and do anything there that you can do in the present.
What it does
Our app for the Oculus Quest lets you load into several different scenarios simulating different time periods. You can look around and explore each environment, and talk to characters whose behavior matches the time period they're found in.
How we built it
To create ChronoSim, we created AI-powered conversation tools which listen to you talk and talk back with text-to-speech. Those were then integrated into non-player characters in a 3D virtual environment you can walk around in VR.
Challenges we ran into
The realism of our characters was limited by a severe software bug in Unreal Engine 5. Instead of using realistic human models, we had to use basic capsules to simulate our characters.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We got a combination of AI tools to hold a conversation with a human, simulating variable personalities based on the time period the characters are living in. Also, we created our own system of movement in VR within fully rendered 3D scenes from scratch.
What we learned
While creating ChronoSim, we learned the workflow of using Unreal Engine, and we got a sense of the program's limitations.
What's next for ChronoSim
With more time to develop the app, we could troubleshoot or work around the limitations of Unreal Engine, and give our characters much more realistic models and animations.
