What it does
Our team built a puzzle game full of mini-games, transforming in-theme from “retro” to “modern” throughout. Beginning with a text-based escape room, you must pass an 8-bit arcade puzzle, navigate Wiki links, beat Snakes & Ladders & PowerUps, escape an SMS chat, jump through a modern-style 2D platformer, and finally, give an AI chatbot the secret code. The games all vary in difficulty and skill required. Any game can be skipped by pressing the escape key. A speedrun stopwatch runs throughout the ~20 minute exciting playthrough.
Inspiration
Our team was inspired by traditional escape rooms, but we did not want to adhere to one “aesthetic” for every puzzle. Some of our mini-games are a twist on classic board games, video games, or websites. We enjoyed trying out a few different UI styles as well.
How we built it
We built this project entirely in Pygame, which was a little challenging, but it seems to also fit the “Retro vs. Modern” theme.
Challenges we ran into
Finishing an entire project in 24 hours is NOT easy, and we struggled through our initial ideas->reality phase, but as the night moved along we were able to have a working product at all stages.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Since this was our team's first hackathon, we learned a lot about collaborating on a project as a group and setting realistic goals, and our coding skills definitely improved throughout. Being able to create a project from start to finish is a first for many of us.
What we learned
We learned a lot of technical skills, through both our own code and reading each other’s. While the mini-games were split up and assigned to people, we added unifying touches to every level.
What's next for Time Escape
Time Escape is a living game, with room for more levels to be added at any time.
