Inspiration

We were inspired by different art installations that explore progressions through time. We knew that none of us had much experience with hardware so we tried to play to our artistic strengths by keeping it simple.

What it does

Rotates through how similar rooms would look like through different time periods.

How we built it

It was built using mostly cardboard, foam board, paint, and paper. It also uses an Arduino board connected to a DC motor to keep the display spinning from underneath.

Challenges we ran into

We 3D-modelled a lot of it before discovering the IYH wouldn't be open for Sunday and therefore we wouldn't be able to use any of what we made (we realized this about an hour before the end of Saturday). Therefore we had to quickly make the display including all posters and furniture outside of the event, and paint / put it together the next day. Additionally, one of our teammates who had a lot of materials we had to use got sick, so the morning before Sunday's meeting we had to run to buy things and it maybe didn't turn as well as it could.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of honestly just getting something like this done in such a short time frame, as well as putting ourselves out there to learn new skills like Arduino and physical prototyping.

What we learned

We learned a lot about hardware in general, like putting together an Arduino circuit physically as well as how to program it. We also learned about the value of time management, teamwork, and generally being aware of everything going on (like the IYH not being open on Sunday).

What's next for Space Through Time

We originally wanted it so the viewer would look at one room at a time, and when they pressed a button the display would spin a quarter circle to the next room, so that would probably go next. Later on, we also wanted each room to be lit up as the viewer moved through them, as well as a text display showing the year.
