Inspiration
In a 23rd century’s tech led world, AI has become human’s best friend, and a personalized assistant. Healthcare has evolved and longevity established, and the human body has adopted living for 150 years on Earth. And now we ask an existential question - Does it matter how long your body lasts if you don’t FEEL yourself living through the moments? Time Drop was born for exactly this purpose. They say one who has control of the mind and time is one who has all power. Time drop is the embodiment of Chronoception - the sense of perceiving time. It’s your personal droplet, a visualization of time itself, as fluid as water yet as solid. Time drop is a direct reflection of your mind. You can turn the dial down according to the experience you are living. If it’s vibrating and warm, you are "burning" through your life too fast. If it’s a calm, cool blue, you are anchored in the 1.0x baseline, the True Rate of living. Train your mind to control how it perceives time and savor every moment to truly live life.
What it does
Time Drop is a speculative wearable interface that visualizes your perception of time in real time. Instead of measuring productivity or efficiency, it helps people become aware of how they are experiencing life in the moment. The core interface is a fluid “time droplet” visualization that reacts to cognitive and emotional signals. As your mental state shifts, the droplet changes temperature, color, vibration, and movement. 🔵 Cool Blue (1.0x) – The True Rate of Living. You are present and grounded. 🔴 Warm + Vibrating – Time is accelerating; you may be rushing through moments. 🌊 Fluid Movement – A reflective state where time perception slows and expands. Users can also adjust a dial of perception, a symbolic interaction that encourages mindfulness and reflection on how they want to experience time. Rather than optimizing time, Time Drop helps people feel it.
How we built it
We designed Time Drop using a combination of Figma Make, Figma Slides, and external AI tools. Our workflow included: Using Figma Make to generate early motion and interaction concepts for the droplet visualization. Designing the interface flows and storytelling presentation in Figma Slides. Creating the dynamic droplet animation using Figma make to achieve a fluid organic movement. Editing and compositing assets through video tools before importing them back into Figma for the final presentation. Manually refining interactions and visual states in Figma to ensure the concept felt cohesive and expressive. This hybrid workflow allowed us to quickly experiment while maintaining design control.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled with Figma Make and animations. We were able to make the animations, but it was a bit tricky putting Figma Make animations into the Figma slides. We also noticed that Figma Make took a while to process when given a prompt, then it would need refinements and that would take time. This led to us doing things manually because it was quicker. Additionally, it required the team to go through other platforms to accomplish tasks. Whether it was video editing, making the time drop (the moving blob). When the video was imported into Figma it did not allow a transparent background which had us switching the backdrop of the frame itself.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of translating an abstract concept like chronoception (the perception of time) into a tangible product experience. Most importantly, we created a concept that shifts the conversation from time management to time awareness.
What we learned
This project taught us a lot about the strengths and limitations of AI-assisted design tools like Figma Make. Some key takeaways: AI tools are great for rapid ideation, but still require human direction and refinement. Motion and interaction concepts often require multiple tools and workflows to achieve the intended result. Prompting AI effectively is an iterative design process, similar to prototyping. Sometimes manual design is faster and more precise when working under time constraints. Overall, we learned how to balance AI assistance with traditional design craft.
What's next for Time Drop
Expanding the concept into a personal wellbeing ecosystem that helps people cultivate mindfulness and presence in a hyper-accelerated world. Ultimately, Time Drop aims to answer a simple but powerful question: In a world where we can live longer than ever, how do we truly feel alive in the time we have?
