Inspiration
Since one of the presenter topics was on environmental intersectionality, I decided that I wanted to make a game about something related to that subject. I settled on making a game about deforestation.
What it does
Timber is a short, horror-inspired game about felling trees. I chose to make the game akin to a horror experience to help drive home the point of the game, which is the impacts of deforestation. I wanted to give the player incentive to keep chopping down the trees to see the little messages, but also make the game unsettling to show them the impacts of their actions on the game world.
How I built it
The game was developed in C# using Unity, with models made in Blender and some texture editing with Paint.NET.
Challenges I ran into
As a solo developer I was in an extreme time crunch. Unity also sometimes struggles to run properly on my computer in conjunction with blender, so long loading times was an issue. Additionally, there were some hitbox bugs due to quickly written code that ended up taking a long time to debug.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm very happy with the end results. I was able to achieve my vision in the time period, and even got a few extra features like particle effects.
What's next for Timber
I'd like to make the game longer and expand on the story a bit, as right now the game doesn't have a large amount of information for the player. I'd also like to add sounds, as I couldn't do it at HOTH due to not having headphones.
Video Notes
The last part of the demo was done in the editor, as exporting takes a long time and I didn't have time to re-export the game before the deadline. The downloadable version of the game contains the ending.
