Inspiration

The idea was inspired by the need to visualize different floor tiles in real spaces before purchasing, ensuring the right choice for aesthetics and practicality. Mixed Reality enables users to see how tiles will look in their rooms, making the decision process faster and more confident.

What it does

The application allows users to apply different tiles on their real-world surfaces in real time using Mixed Reality. Users can experiment with various tile designs, patterns, and colors while accurately visualizing how the tiles would look under different lighting conditions in their space.

How we built it

We developed the application using the Unity Interaction SDK along with Meta features for immersive Mixed Reality experiences. Advanced floor-detection algorithms were implemented to identify surfaces accurately, while Unity’s rendering capabilities were used to ensure realistic tile textures and lighting effects.

Challenges we ran into

Floor Detection: Achieving precise floor detection and alignment with real-world surfaces, especially in varied lighting conditions. Scaling Accuracy: Ensuring the measurements of the room were accurate to calculate tile requirements without errors. Performance Optimization: Balancing high-quality rendering and real-time interaction in Mixed Reality without compromising the user experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Room Measurement: Successfully integrating a feature that measures room dimensions to calculate accurate tile consumption and prevent over-purchasing. Real-Time Interaction: Creating a smooth and intuitive interface that allows users to instantly see the results of their tile choices. Enhanced Visualization: Providing a realistic and immersive experience for users, making it easier to visualize the final look of their space.

What we learned

Spatial Mapping: The importance of precise spatial mapping for aligning virtual elements with real-world spaces. User Experience Design: Designing intuitive controls that enhance user interaction with Mixed Reality applications. Real-Time Rendering: Optimizing textures and lighting for a seamless, lifelike visualization experience.

What's next for Tile Visualiser in Mixed Reality

Augmented Reality Integration: Expanding the application to support AR, allowing users to overlay tile designs directly onto surfaces using a smartphone or tablet. Customizable Tile Options: Adding more features, such as the ability to customize tile shapes, grout colors, and layouts. Furniture and Fixture Integration: Introducing options to visualize tiles alongside virtual furniture or fixtures to provide a complete room preview. Market Launch: Preparing the application for release to homeowners, interior designers, and retail tile stores. AI Recommendations: Implementing AI to suggest tile designs based on room dimensions, lighting, and user preferences.
