Inspiration
Children have countless thoughts, emotions, and experiences every day, but they often struggle to express them clearly or feel that traditional learning methods are boring and stressful. We were inspired by the idea of combining journaling, curiosity, and learning into a single playful experience.
Tiki Notes was inspired by how children naturally learn—through stories, questions, and fun conversations rather than strict rules or grammar. We wanted to create a safe and engaging space where children can freely write about their day without worrying about mistakes, while still learning something new from their own experiences.
What it does
Tiki Notes is an interactive journaling web application designed especially for children.
In the app, a child can write a daily journal or diary entry describing what happened during their day—such as playing cricket, going to school, meeting friends, or feeling happy or sad. Sticky Notes reads the journal entry without judging grammatical errors and responds in a friendly, playful way.
The app then asks fun and curiosity-driven Q&A questions based on what the child wrote. For example: • If a child writes, “I played cricket today and hit a six”, Sticky Notes explains how a six is hit and the physics behind it in a simple and exciting way. • If a child mentions the sky or weather, the app may explain why the sky is blue using easy-to-understand science concepts.
Each interaction feels like a conversation with a smart, friendly companion that turns everyday experiences into learning moments.
How we built it
We built Sticky Notes as a child-friendly interactive website using the Gemini 3 API as the core intelligence behind the app.
The workflow is simple: 1. The child writes a journal entry on the website. 2. The text is sent to the Gemini 3 API. 3. Gemini analyzes the content, understands the context, and generates:
- Fun questions
- Simple explanations
- Interactive learning responses 4. The UI presents the responses in an engaging and playful manner, similar to sticky notes on a board.
Special care was taken to ensure the responses are non-judgmental, friendly, and age-appropriate.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing the system to ignore grammatical mistakes while still understanding the child’s intent correctly.
Another challenge was making sure that the explanations—especially for physics or science concepts—were simple, fun, and not overwhelming. Balancing educational content with entertainment was critical.
We also worked on creating an interface that feels exciting and approachable for children while still being technically robust.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
• Successfully integrating Gemini 3 API to generate intelligent, context-aware responses. • Creating a platform that turns daily journaling into interactive learning. • Designing a concept that supports emotional expression, curiosity, and education at the same time. • Building a project that can genuinely help children learn without pressure.
What we learned
Through Tiki Notes, we learned how powerful AI can be when used responsibly for education. We gained hands-on experience with: • Prompt engineering for child-friendly AI responses • Designing educational experiences through storytelling • Integrating AI APIs into real-world applications • Building products focused on empathy and learning, not just technology
What's next for Tiki Notes
In the future, we plan to: • Add voice input and audio responses for younger children • Introduce progress tracking and learning insights for parents • Expand topics beyond physics to include history, biology, and moral stories • Make Sticky Notes accessible as a mobile app for wider reach
Tiki Notes aims to become a daily learning companion for children—where every small experience turns into a fun lesson.
