Inspiration
This project is inspired by Tiger Hunters (Chakho-gapsa), a special military unit operated by the Joseon Dynasty to protect local communities from tigers and other threats. The goal was to capture their bravery, the weight of their duty, and the living tension of confronting a tiger in the deep Korean mountains. It is a modern homage to their spirit and historical legacy.
What it does
The project generates music, voices, and images that fit the narrative of the Tiger Hunters. One of the biggest challenges in image generation today is that many AI models fail to distinguish “Korean” aesthetics from other East Asian cultures. To address this, we focused heavily on creating visuals that are accurately and intentionally Korean, such as: • Hairstyle and clothing silhouettes • Traditional weapons • Mountain landscapes • Color tones and cultural motifs
The project forms a pipeline of story → images → music → final video, delivering a historically grounded Korean narrative to the audience.
How we built it
• We studied traditional records, late-Joseon military archives, tiger-hunting methods, and weaponry for historical accuracy. • We combined animation-style cutscenes with custom sound design to build a unified world. • Instead of using common modern ANIME styles, we intentionally crafted visuals with a Korean and East-Asian traditional mood, using a limited color palette. • Special emphasis was placed on the atmosphere of the forest, the weight and presence of the tiger, and the disciplined breath of the warrior. • As a symbolic choice, we used the red and blue colors of the Korean flag (Taegeuk) as accent colors to reinforce cultural identity.
Challenges we ran into
• Balancing historical accuracy with creative fantasy elements • Realistically depicting tiger movement and close-combat action • Accurately representing traditional weapons (chakho blade, axe, small matchlock gun) • Recreating period-correct clothing and landscapes while keeping strong visual appeal • Encountering SFW filters that blocked intended outputs • Overcoming cultural bias in generative AI
For example, typing “ancient Joseon” often results in “ancient Asia,” producing Japanese or Chinese-influenced imagery instead of Korean visuals
Accomplishments that we're proud of
• Successfully reinterpreted the identity and spirit of the Tiger Hunters in a modern and compelling way • We used traditionally static ink-wash art as dynamic action scenes, and among many possible visual styles, we focused on creating a distinctly Korean ink-wash aesthetic. • Built a stylistic direction rooted in traditional Korean elements while still appealing to a global audience • Effectively visualized the atmosphere of the forest, the tension of the hunt, and the imposing presence of the tiger • Combined immersive action with engaging narrative to create a cohesive storytelling experience
What we learned
• How to interpret traditional historical sources while creatively reimagining them • How to balance traditional sensibilities with modern visual direction • The potential and scalability of history-based fantasy worldbuilding
What's next for Tiger Hunter
The next step is to take lesser-known Korean historical themes and expand them into • cinematic music videos, • short films, or • animated shorts.
Ultimately, the goal is to build a fully realized Korean historical-fantasy universe where story, visuals, and music come together in a culturally authentic way.
