Inspiration
We were inspired by the small businesses that are struggling to stay open during COVID-19. Every week, we hear a new story on the news on how a local business gets shut down. Turns out, over 100,000 small businesses have shutdown due to COVID-19. We are very passionate because the countries that we live in are hit the hardest by COVID-19 (US and India). Many more have been affected as customers diminished and employees are forced to leave. We realized that no one has focused their attention to the millions of struggling businesses world wide by giving them a platform to voice their help and necessities. Anya S, Karen H, and Vanshika A, came up with a great prototype to tackle the worldwide issue of small businesses struggling during COVID-19.
What it does
Our project is a website and platform that allows small and local businesses receive help from expert volunteers in the community. They first can create an account and then update their profile and page. These businesses can post their needs like building a website to digitalize their business like selling products. Volunteers can search and filter businesses based on their skillset and other aspects. If there is an interaction between the two, they will able to see in the notification tab.
How we built it
We built this website through a combination of languages including ** HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.** We used a CSS template from templated.com as a start but then changed most of the parts. The CSS was used to control how they elements look like (colors, fonts, margin, etc.). We used HTML to put the elements on the site like images, buttons, links, and footers. JavaScript was used for the animations and pop up windows for Log in, Sign Up, and Notifications tab.
Challenges we ran into
We faced many tough challenges during this. We were beginners to Hackathon as only one person in our team had done a Hackathon before. Two of our members had** little to no experience of programming before*. On top of that, we are all * high school students that never met each before and had conflicting schedules for school*. We had members in **India and the United States* so we would have to sacrifice our late nights and early mornings for this project.(2 pm EST = 11:30 am IST) Through all these challenges, we came up with a great prototype to tackle the issue of small businesses struggling during COVID-19.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were proud of that through all of our restless nights and mornings, conflicting schedules, and programming experience, we were able to create a functioning prototype to help an issue that we are all passionate about. We are proud of how user friendly our website is and the unique features like the notification pop up.
What we learned
We learned the sacrifices that are necessary to create a great and effective product. It is not easily to have an idea and establish it. We are learned new things in programing like HTML and JavaScript.
What's next for TieNBusiness
TieNBusiness will continue to work together to publish a full functioning product using PHP to work with user input. We hope to have more accessibility for the volunteers on our page.
