What Tidbits is a short news application that presents 100 word summaries of current events across the world in a card format. Users can swipe up and down to get their short summaries of current events and within 5-10 minutes they will be up to date with everything that is going on in the world. Fresh articles are pulled every 2 minutes to keep content up to date.

Why While there are many news providers, we felt that there weren’t enough news aggregators that provide all the current events in a single platform in an informative, summarized form. Most people would prefer to get quick summaries of the news rather than go down the rabbit hole of multiple news articles that are pages long.

Application architecture: The application has two main parts: News Collector and Summarizer LLM. For the news collector, we used the news API to fetch global news articles. For Summarizer LLM, we used Open AI's gpt models to create 100 word summaries of the article and also to generate an image that suits the summarized news article. We used Supabase for storing the summariazed news articles and the generated images.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge that we ran into was being able to edit the backend of the application where we can suggest additional informational articles next to the current one that you are reading. For example, if you're reading the article about the oil prices being down, you should also be presented with informational articles from Wikipedia on OPEC, Oil Pricing, Current Conflicts etc. We would've loved to demonstrate this feature.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to come up with a fairly functional news aggregator website within an hour which felt quite fascinating for us given that in traditional dev environment, this project could've taken us a day or so. So being able to quickly generate accurate prompts is what we are proud of.
