Inspiration

In a world full of distractions, staying productive can feel like an uphill battle. We wanted to build something unique that doesn’t just remind users to focus but also makes the process engaging and fun. Inspired by gamified productivity tools, study timers, and the soothing power of Lo-Fi music, Tick-Tock Torture was born—a playful yet effective solution to procrastination.

What it does

Tick-Tock Torture is a Chrome extension designed to keep you on track with your goals.

  • Study Timer: Set a timer for focused study sessions with real-time countdown tracking.
  • Lo-Fi Beats: Enjoy calming Lo-Fi music to enhance concentration.
  • Productivity Alarm: A recurring alarm challenges you with fun tasks that must be completed to stop it. These challenges keep your brain active and your mind sharp.
  • Interactive Challenges: Solve math problems and earn your right to silence the alarm!

How we built it

We combined modern web technologies to deliver a seamless and immersive experience:

  • Frontend: Built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, styled with Google’s Orbitron font for a modern, digital aesthetic.
  • Chrome API Integration: Leveraged Chrome's alarms, notifications, and storage APIs to create interactive features like study timers and recurring alarms.
  • Sound and Interactivity: Incorporated custom audio effects for alarms and Lo-Fi tracks for productivity enhancement.

Challenges we ran into

  • Real-Time Countdown: Implementing a smooth, real-time countdown timer that worked efficiently within Chrome's extension environment was tricky.
  • Chrome APIs: Learning to handle Chrome's storage and alarms APIs while maintaining a seamless user experience required extensive debugging.
  • Styling: Achieving a professional, polished look for all components took a lot of iteration and attention to detail.
  • Balancing Fun and Functionality: Striking the right balance between playful design and practical features was a creative challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Polished User Experience: The extension boasts a modern interface that’s visually appealing and intuitive to use.
  • Dynamic Functionality: From real-time timers to interactive challenges, we created a well-rounded tool that’s both functional and engaging.
  • Innovative Concept: Gamifying productivity and making alarms fun is a unique approach to tackling procrastination.

What we learned

  • Chrome Extension Development: We gained hands-on experience in building and deploying Chrome extensions, particularly leveraging APIs for real-time updates.
  • Time Management: Working on this project reinforced the importance of staying organized and breaking tasks into manageable chunks.
  • User-Centered Design: Iterating on features and styles taught us how to prioritize user experience without compromising functionality.

What's next for Tick-Tock Torture

  • Custom Challenges: Allow users to input their own challenges to further personalize their productivity journey.
  • Sound Library Expansion: Add more ambient sound options, including white noise and nature sounds.
  • Analytics Dashboard: Introduce a productivity tracking dashboard to provide users insights into their study habits.
  • Mobile App Integration: Extend the project to mobile platforms for on-the-go productivity.

Tick-Tock Torture isn’t just an extension—it’s a commitment to a more focused and productive you!
