Throttle is a mobile app designed as a modern alternative to traditional online automotive forums, streamlining new business acquisition for enthusiast groups, increasing advertising ROI for service providers and retailers, and providing more efficient, more trusted, and discounted purchasing opportunities for consumer enthusiasts.
Our inspiration for Throttle comes from an incident a few months ago, where our founder, Kyle Ziegler's, car was hit in the driveway of his house by his sister. His limited options included calling around asking for estimates and when he could bring his car in, or drive to the various body shops. He saw that a mobile application could be used to streamline this process. Throttle aims at connecting these individuals with local auto shops in an efficient manner by showing trusted reviews, the estimated cost, and a time frame of when the project can be completed. Throttle obtains revenue from two different areas, the primary being a percentage off the transaction when the car project is completed, and the other being advertisements for shops and aftermarket retailers.
We built it using the Ionic Framework as our CLI to wrap our Angular code in a multi platform mobile application. One challenge that we had earlier on is transitioning from Parse to Firebase as our backend as a service. We have written over 3,000 lines of code for the application, and plan on releasing a beta version this summer.
Our team is also part of the von Liebig center here on campus, where we have refined our business model canvas, conducted a multitude of customer interviews, as well as completed a comprehensive market assessment on where our application fits in the marketplace. As part of this program, our team won $1,000 and were given a mentor to guide us and help grow our idea and company throughout the quarter.
Throttle is looking at ways to market our application to consumers. Outlined in our business model canvas, our channels include car media such as Motor Trend, Car and Driver, online forums, and car shows/meets.
