Inspiration
We wanted to create a solution that addresses the growing need for mental and physical wellness among SMU students. Recognizing the stress and challenges students face, we were inspired to build a platform that offers easy access to mental health resources, fitness tracking, and peer support in one app.
What it does
Thrive SMU provides students with a platform to manage their mental and physical health. It offers features like daily emotional check-ins, anonymous peer-to-peer mental health forums, telehealth services, and a fitness tracker. Additionally, it keeps students informed about on-campus activities and allows them to schedule counseling appointments with ease.
How we built it
We used a combination of React Native for the front-end development and Node.js for the back-end services, with MongoDB for data storage. The team focused on creating an intuitive user experience that connects various aspects of student wellness in one cohesive app.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was integrating the various services—such as mental health check-ins, fitness tracking, and telehealth scheduling—into a single platform while maintaining a smooth user experience. We also faced some difficulties with ensuring the security and anonymity of the peer-to-peer forums.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of successfully integrating mental health services and fitness tracking into a unified app. Additionally, building an anonymous peer-to-peer chat feature for mental health support is something we believe will make a positive impact on student life at SMU.
What we learned
How to work as a team to meet deadlines and accomplish goals. We learned how to build our project by prioritizing by tackling each feature step by step rather than focusing on the result.
What's next for ThriveSMU
Our next step is to modify our app to be versatile and be used by any campus worldwide.
