Inspiration
The decision to tackle food wastage came from observing the significant environmental and economic impacts of unsold food in Singapore. The idea was inspired when I visited Don Don Donki and noticed discounted sushi being sold to clear their end-of-day stock, demonstrating effective surplus food management. I aimed to create a local solution tailored to Singapore's unique needs, providing convenient and affordable options for consumers while also helping underprivileged communities access food. Thus, I saw an opportunity to create a sustainable system that benefits consumers, businesses, the underprivileged, and the environment.
What it does
This app addresses food wastage generated by retailers in Singapore by connecting consumers with discounted unsold food from restaurants and cafes as well as near expiry items from supermarkets and also allowing retailers to donate to local communities.
Design process
My journey began with a simple observation: the sight of discounted sushi at a local supermarket, a small gesture in the battle against food wastage. Inspired by this, I embarked on a mission to create an innovative solution. I brainstormed the target audience, identified their needs, and researched various app interfaces, drawing inspiration from successful food delivery apps. Armed with this knowledge, I developed a concept for an app that connects consumers with surplus food while supporting underprivileged communities. Using Figma, I created initial prototypes, refining them through user testing. The prototypes evolved into an app with features like flash sales and real-time alerts for consumers, and inventory tracking and surplus food donations for businesses. Also, I plan to collaborate with the government and social organizations, offering e-vouchers for low-income individuals. The app was designed to be user-friendly, with simplified interfaces. After rigorous development and testing, I successfully launched the first version of my app. My journey is ongoing, driven by our commitment to caring for the environment and those who are less fortunate. I hope that this non-profit initiative will have a meaningful impact on society.
How is it different
My design stands out for its comprehensive approach, offering a unique combination of environmental sustainability and social impact. Thrive has a wide range of features that cater to both businesses and consumers. Unlike other similar products, Thrive not only reduces food waste and promotes sustainable practices but also directly supports underprivileged communities by providing meals to the needy. Thrive is a non-profit initiative, collaborating closely with the government to align with Singapore's environmental and social goals. Additionally, Thrive features a daily food wastage and carbon footprint tracker, a unique tool that helps businesses monitor and manage their food wastage effectively. This tracker provides valuable insights into their wastage patterns, enabling them to make informed decisions on inventory management and food preparation. Thus, businesses can better prepare to cater to demand, reducing overall food wastage.
Future plans
Firstly, I want to develop and refine the app for better usability and impact. I aim to expand our user base among businesses and consumers, increasing surplus food redistributed and meals provided to those in need. My goal is to position Thrive as a leading platform in Singapore for reducing food wastage and supporting underprivileged communities. I plan to forge more partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and businesses to scale our impact and foster a sustainable and inclusive society. Ultimately, Thrive strives to make a significant and lasting impact on Singapore's food wastage problem while supporting vulnerable communities.
