Inspiration
Reddit communities naturally turn unusual posts, missing details, and strange coincidences into shared investigations.
THREAD ZERO began with one question:
What if the comment section was not outside the game, but part of how the mystery was solved?
What it does
THREAD ZERO is a collaborative mystery game in which a subreddit is trapped inside a repeating timeline.
The current case begins at 02:17, when every member receives the same deleted notification. One account remembers what it said, but that account no longer exists.
Players enter the investigation, receive one of four roles, inspect fragmented evidence, compare theories in Reddit comments, and decide what the community should investigate next.
The playable build includes:
- Four investigator roles
- Six interactive evidence cards
- Evidence-detail overlays
- Three community decisions
- Vote visualisation
- A live reset countdown
- Four previous timeline records
- Reddit username integration
- A responsive mobile-first interface
The hook
Every failed timeline leaves behind another question.
Did the community trust the wrong clue? Why did the witness disappear? What exists behind the red door? What will change after the next reset?
Failure becomes part of the mystery rather than a simple game-over screen.
Reddit-native gameplay
THREAD ZERO is designed around collective interpretation.
The evidence deliberately leaves gaps. Players are encouraged to share discoveries, challenge conflicting theories, and discuss which decision the community should support.
The game interface provides the case. Reddit provides the investigation room.
How we built it
THREAD ZERO was built using Reddit's Developer Platform and Devvit.
The experience runs inside a Reddit post. React and TypeScript power the investigation interface, Tailwind CSS provides the responsive visual system, and Hono supports the server structure.
The game was developed and tested directly through Devvit playtest sessions.
Challenges
The main challenge was making a narrative experience feel social instead of placing a conventional solo puzzle inside Reddit.
We addressed this by designing incomplete evidence, multiple investigator identities, community decisions, and a mystery intended to continue in the Reddit comments.
Another challenge was fitting an evidence board, decision system, timeline, and countdown into Reddit's mobile game window. The final interface uses compact cards, evidence overlays, and fixed navigation.
What we learned
Building for Reddit requires treating conversation as a game mechanic.
Players need something meaningful to compare, debate, remember, and influence together.
What's next
Future versions will add persistent community voting, role-specific private clues, daily rounds, participation streaks, player-submitted theories, moderator-created mysteries, and branching timeline consequences.
