Inspiration

Thread Lightly Inspired by a team member's dedication to sustainability and another's passion for fashion, we aimed to merge these interests. Recognizing the lack of a platform for eco-conscious fashion choices, we saw an opportunity to use technology to make a positive, global impact. Our project reflects our desire to support ethical fashion, minimize waste, and empower consumers with knowledge, all driven by our shared commitment to a sustainable future in fashion.

What it does

Thread Lightly is a multi-faceted platform that tackles various aspects of sustainable fashion:

  • Brand Impact Scorecard: We assess fashion brands based on environmental and social responsibility criteria, providing users with transparency and guidance.
  • Sustainable Swap Shop: Our peer-to-peer platform facilitates buying, selling, and swapping pre-loved clothes, promoting circularity and reducing waste.
  • Donation Matchmaker: We connect clothing donations with charities based on needs and location, optimizing impact and eliminating waste.
  • Impact Tracker: Users track their sustainable choices and visualize their environmental and social impact, fostering a sense of accomplishment and community.

How we built it

We developed our website with React and Vite for a fast and modern interface and used Express and Node.js for a strong back end. Bootstrap and React's design tools helped make the site responsive and visually appealing. We added user login and signup features through PostgreSQL for secure data management. This mix of technology ensured our site was both user-friendly and robust.

Challenges we ran into

In our 24-hour hackathon, we encountered notable challenges. Firstly, setting up the database for managing user logins and sign-ups was more complex than anticipated, especially in ensuring data was correctly stored. Deploying the website brought its own set of hurdles, requiring us to navigate through various deployment issues. Additionally, not being co-located and having to collaborate virtually could have been a significant obstacle, but leveraging Airtable for our discussions enabled us to work as if we were together in person, making the process smoother than expected.
