Inspiration
- I used iThoughts for more than 5 years to write down my personal ideas.
- In 2024, the developer closed the business, and the iPhone app was gone from the App Store.
- I did not want to lose my maps (.itmz), and I could not find another mind map app I wanted to use. So I decided to make my own.
What it does
- A native mind map app for Mac, iPhone and iPad. Syncs with iCloud Drive. No account needed.
- High compatibility with the .itmz format.
- 12 themes, emoji icons, notes, relationships, boundaries, callouts and tasks.
- Supports 18 languages.
- On Mac, AI assistants like Claude Code can read and edit your maps through MCP (off by default, and you can undo changes).
How I built it
- Native Swift (AppKit / UIKit / SwiftUI). I tried to draw maps close to the beautiful mind maps of the original app.
- Design policy: a clean and modern UI, easy to read in both light and dark mode.
- Purchases use RevenueCat (the paywall is also in 18 languages). Two choices: yearly or lifetime.
- Solo developer × AI agents (Claude Code / Codex). I used them for design, coding and testing.
Challenges I ran into
- Reproducing the maps of the original app. It is not perfect, but I worked hard so that maps made by former iThoughts users still look and work as before.
- App Review. I heard it can take a long time, so I released a version with limited features first, and kept developing at the same time.
What I learned
- Even with AI agents in summer 2026, making beautiful mind maps is still difficult. I spent more than one month on very detailed checks to polish them.
- How to draw the line between free and paid features, and how to set the price.
What's next
- Polish the UI more.
- Support custom themes.
