Inspiration

Technology has been a way to find community and connections, but this can’t be said for a large part of our elderly population- who seem to be left behind in this new age of advanced technology. Especially after the pandemic, a lot of the elderly’s social lives and connections were cut off, leaving some people completely alone. This lack of quality connections can cause major declines in mental and physical health. This is where Thoughtful Ties aims to include the elderly in this wave of technology, making it easier for them to adapt using an app that caters specifically to their needs.

What it does

Once logging in or signing up, users will be able to navigate the app freely and can access all of its available features:

  • Interacting with other users on the Explore page
  • Customizable personal details on the Profile page
  • Chat feature with other users

How we built it

Before development, Thoughtful Ties was designed and conceptualized in Figma. Thoughtful Ties was created using react-native for mobile app development as it allows for the creation of mobile interfaces for both Android and iOS platforms. By using react-native, we decided to use Expo to help simplify our app development process.

Challenges we ran into

  • Learning how to use GitHub
  • Installing frameworks
  • Learning JavaScript as none of us knew it beforehand
  • Team collaboration
  • Working against the clock

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It was one of our first hackathons! We are proud of the skills we learned and the experience we gained during this hackathon. As well as compiling and building a working mobile app using applications we have never used before :D

What we learned

  • We learned JavaScript
  • Building mobile apps with the expo framework with react-native
  • How to use GitHub

What's Next for Thoughtful Ties

Although Thoughtful Ties is still in the early stages of development, our team plans to update the application with features we couldn't include, as well as bug fixes and major improvements.
