Inspiration
We were inspired by the WEHack theme, “The Future is Now”. What better way to represent the future than the next generation? The children of today will be the leaders of tomorrow, and with the planet in the state that it is now, we feel that it is more important than ever to educate them on how to be sustainable. By introducing them to the idea of sustainability at a young age, we hope to build habits that will help guide them to a better future.
What it does
Planet B(ee) asks kids to fill out a quick survey at the end of the day that asks about their sustainable habits, like if they used a reusable water bottle or wasted food. Based on their responses, the state of Planet Earth will change from day to day. On top of that, our bee mascot Albie will update the kids on how Planet Earth is doing and give tips and fun facts related to sustainability.
How we built it
We built our mockup for Planet B(ee) using Figma.
Challenges we ran into
As we designed the app, we became concerned that it might be a bit dark for children. We wanted it to be focused on rewarding sustainable actions to help kids learn and build positive habits rather than using scare tactics and making children anxious about the future. With this realization, we changed some of the details so that Planet B(ee) was more optimistic and encouraging.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how to use Figma to design a mobile app, and we also learned more about how we can lead by example and live sustainably every day.
What's next for There is no Planet B(ee)
We hope to improve our current assets for Planet B(ee), like animating Planet Earth and adding more levels of Planet Earth’s condition. We also would like to add daily challenges for children to complete so that they can continue changing Planet Earth’s condition even after they’ve taken the survey.
