Inspiration
Living in Korea, I wanted to create a folk horror film rooted in Korean culture using AI. Strange cults and mysterious entities exist everywhere in the world, but my goal was to reinterpret them through a uniquely Korean atmosphere and share that unsettling mood with global audiences.
What it does
The project uses AI as a filmmaking tool to create a photorealistic, shot-like experience while capturing the essence of Korean horror aesthetics. It maintains a chilling, eerie tension from start to finish, immersing viewers in an atmosphere of dread.
How we built it
Used ElevenLabs Voice Design to generate an elderly man’s voice and added it through dubbing. Created all imagery with MidJourney. Converted images into video using Runway and Kling with their Image-to-Video features. Finalized the film with mixing and color grading in editing tools.
Challenges we ran into
Since this film was produced before the release of the Nanobanana model, maintaining character consistency across shots was difficult. Moreover, due to the nature of AI films, it was challenging to rely solely on storytelling to drive the atmosphere. To overcome this, I focused on sustaining a sense of horror and tension until the very end.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite the storytelling limitations of AI filmmaking, this project proved that it is possible to sustain suspense and eerie atmosphere throughout an entire film.
What we learned
We learned that although AI filmmaking comes with technical constraints and limitations, it also opens up new creative possibilities. Iteration and experimentation are key to pushing the boundaries of this medium.
What's next for There is No Monster
The film will be submitted to both domestic and international film festivals. Looking forward, I plan to create more experimental AI films that highlight Korea’s unique culture and horror aesthetics, offering audiences fresh and captivating experiences.
