Inspiration

I'm a Computer Science Tutor/TA in the Computer Science department. My inspiration comes from seeing students struggle not just with academic content but also with stress and anxiety. I wanted to create a tool that supports both their academic and emotional needs, ensuring they receive comprehensive assistance.

What it does

TheraTutor is an AI-driven platform that offers personalized tutoring sessions tailored to students' emotional states. It combines academic support in subjects like math and science with mental health resources, creating a holistic support system for students.

How I built it

I used multiple AI tools including GPT-4o for conversational AI, Adobe Generative Images for visual content, and Taskade for project management. I worked between these tools to design and implement TheraTutor, ensuring it met the needs of both academic tutoring and emotional support.

Challenges I ran into

One of the significant challenges was getting LaTeX to render correctly for math expressions, which required integrating MathJax into the project. Additionally, troubleshooting the navigation system and ensuring that it worked seamlessly across different sections of the platform was challenging.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud of successfully implementing LaTeX for math expression rendering and setting up a crisis referral system for students needing immediate mental health support.

What I learned

I learned that while AI has many capabilities, it still has limitations and cannot replace human therapists and teachers. However, AI can significantly help bridge the gap for students who often lack access to these resources.

What's next for TheraTutor

The next step for TheraTutor includes developing interactive personalized games to make learning more engaging for students, enhancing both their academic skills and emotional well-being. The goal is to help students identify areas for improvement without the pressure of disappointing anyone.

Additionally, I aim to make TheraTutor sensitive to the demographic it serves, addressing the unique challenges faced by underrepresented minorities and ensuring the platform provides inclusive and supportive tutoring for all students.
