Inspiration
We were inspired by the presence of therapy dogs across college campuses during final exam periods, which gives students moments of joy amid studying. We wanted to create a Google Chrome extension that captures a bit of that same joy and can be used by anyone who needs a little pick-me-up while doing work online.
What it does
With the Chrome extension installed, users can select it at any time to see a cute dog appear on their screen. If you pet the dog (by clicking the button), you'll receive a fun surprise that instantly lifts your mood!
How we built it
Through a combination of html, css, and javascript (all languages we had either worked minimally with before or never used before), we crafted code that fits within the framework set by Google for Chrome extensions.
Challenges we ran into
We were super excited when we got our code to work, only to learn that Google does not allow inline scripting for Chrome extensions -- we had to figure out another way to make our program work. And using a new language for the first time is always a challenge (but also fun & exciting!).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a working Chrome extension using languages with which we were unfamiliar. And creating something that we are actually going to use ourselves!
What's next for therapyDog
We have submitted our program to be published in the Chrome Web Store. If approved, we will be sure to share the link here and with our friends/family! Until it's published, check out Github for instructions on manually installing the extension (it's super easy!).
