About TherapAI
Inspiration
During my studies in Advanced Machine Learning and Multimedia Intelligence, I recognized the pressing need for accessible, effective therapy tools for patients undergoing rehabilitation. Many patients face difficulties adhering to therapy plans due to lack of real-time guidance and personalized feedback. TherapAI was inspired by the vision of empowering both patients and therapists by combining AI with intuitive technology to make rehabilitation more engaging, precise, and effective—anytime, anywhere.
What it does
TherapAI is an AI-powered rehabilitation companion that uses real-time motion tracking to monitor patients’ physical therapy exercises. It provides instant visual and audio feedback to help users perform movements correctly, ensuring faster and safer recovery. Therapists can remotely track patient progress through detailed session reports and adjust therapy plans accordingly. The system aims to improve adherence, reduce injury risk, and enhance overall rehabilitation outcomes.
How we built it
We built TherapAI as a responsive web application that leverages AI-based pose estimation models running directly in the user’s browser via webcam input. The system processes movement data in real time, comparing it against ideal exercise forms to generate corrective feedback. The backend securely stores user data and progress, accessible to therapists through a dedicated dashboard. For an engaging useful experience, a focus was made on developing a user-friendly interface and perfect, low-latency interactions.
Challenges we ran into
Achieving accurate and consistent pose estimation in varying lighting conditions and environments was challenging. We had to fine-tune model parameters and optimize data preprocessing to balance precision with real-time performance. Designing clear and effective feedback mechanisms that patients could easily understand required multiple iterations and testing. Ensuring data privacy and building secure authentication systems were critical given the sensitivity of health data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully created a seamless integration of AI-driven pose detection with an interactive user interface that provides immediate corrective feedback. The platform supports both patients and therapists, improving remote rehabilitation possibilities. Our solution demonstrated strong potential to increase therapy adherence and enhance recovery outcomes through technology. We are still actively working to improve the AI model's precision and robustness, and we are in the process of integrating it fully with the web platform to provide a smooth and scalable user experience.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of applying AI models in real-time web environments and the importance of user-centric design in healthcare technology. We also learned how to handle sensitive data responsibly and build secure, scalable systems. The project emphasized the critical balance between technical innovation and empathy for end-users, reinforcing how impactful technology can be when thoughtfully applied.
What's next for TherapAI
Future improvements include expanding the exercise library with personalized programs, integrating speech-guided coaching, and enhancing the therapist dashboard with AI-driven analytics for better patient insights. We also plan to explore mobile app development to increase accessibility and add support for more complex movement patterns and therapies. Ultimately, we aim to create a full ecosystem that empowers patients, therapists, and healthcare providers worldwide.
