The inspiration for us to create this website was through the personal experiences of one of our team members. What happened was that they hadn't really been keeping in touch with their therapist and it had been a while since they had seen them. Unbeknownst to the therapist, their patient had been going through some really tough times alone and started to negatively spiral. Creating this online journal for patients to use outside of appointment times allows therapists to check in on how they're doing and make sure that their daily life is progressing ok.
What it does
How this works is that patients keep an online journal of logs about how they've been feeling and significant events that are happening in their daily life. Patients keep journal logs that include an emotion rating from 1 to 10, a description of their moods, as well as a section to write their entry in. Logging in as a therapist enables you to view your patients' journal logs. Whether patients update this daily or weekly is something that can be discussed between the patient and therapist.
How we built it
We built TheraLog using HTML, CSS, JS, and Firebase. Two of us worked on the frontend, creating Figma prototypes and then translating them into code, while the other two worked on the backend, linking Firebase with the app for authentication and journal database management.
Challenges we ran into
Incorporating the frontend with the backend was a learning curve, as most of us were only familiar with mostly frontend. Also, we tried to incorporate WebRTC to make it possible for the therapist and patient to video call on the site itself, but unfortunately, we didn't get past the finicky prototype version.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were a team that formed after the hackathon time began, also it took a while for us to decide on an idea, but after a few hours in we finally got underway. We created a simple working site that allowed users to sign in and log in to their journal entries.
What we learned
We became more well-versed with CSS, HTML, and JS as well as graphic design. On the backend side, we learned to work with Firebase better, extracting fields of users and learning alternative methods to authenticate.
