Inspiration

Education is a fundamental right, yet millions of learners worldwide especially in underserved and rural communities lack access to quality academic help and emotional support. With limited teachers, resources, and language barriers, students often fall behind. We wanted to create a tool that could offer round-the-clock assistance, guidance, and motivation using only WhatsApp or a simple web link.

What it does

ThePacificEdu is an AI-powered chatbot that:

  1. Answers academic questions using GPT-based intelligence

  2. Supports multiple languages (planned) to reduce learning barriers

  3. Provides emotional and motivational support to struggling learners

  4. Works via WhatsApp (using Twilio) and the web

  5. Can be integrated with national curriculums like Bangladesh’s NCTB for targeted help

How I built it

  1. Backend: Python + Flask

  2. AI: OpenAI GPT (via API) for conversational intelligence

  3. Hosting: Deployed using Render

  4. Messaging Integration: Built with Twilio for WhatsApp

  5. Version control: GitHub for codebase and collaboration

  6. Frontend: Minimalist API responses, future plan for UI

Challenges we ran into

  1. Initial deployment issues on Render and GitHub syncing errors

  2. OpenAI API integration errors due to version mismatches

  3. Lack of funds to activate Twilio’s full WhatsApp messaging support

  4. Managing large code updates and merge conflicts during setup

  5. Time pressure to finalize before hackathon deadline

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Completed a fully functional AI backend capable of responding to natural language

  2. Successfully deployed a working chatbot environment on Render

  3. Integrated OpenAI GPT and tested live academic conversations

  4. Learned and overcame multiple technical barriers within hours

What we learned

  1. Deep understanding of OpenAI API handling and Flask-based deployments

  2. Practical experience with Git version control, Render hosting, and Twilio integration

  3. How to manage real-world development bottlenecks under time constraints

  4. The power of AI in solving social and educational problems

What's next for ThePacificEdu – AI Chatbot for Underserved Learners

  1. Add full WhatsApp support for real-time mobile-based interaction

2, Integrate Bangladesh and other countries NCTB curriculum to assist with textbook and exam questions

  1. Expand to multilingual support for diverse regions

  2. Partner with NGOs and schools for real-world testing

  3. Launch a mobile app version for wider access
