Inspiration

Growing up in rural Bangladesh, I’ve seen how underserved students struggle without access to teachers, academic support, or emotional guidance. While the world moves ahead with digital learning, many communities are left behind. This inspired me to build a solution that works even without full internet access — to empower those who are often ignored. ThePacificEdu is a chatbot made for them.

What it does

ThePacificEdu is an AI-powered chatbot that provides:

  • Academic help in both Bangla and English
  • Emotional wellness prompts (motivation, stress relief)
  • Quizzes and subject-specific summaries
  • Support through SMS and WhatsApp (via Twilio)
  • A simple interface for low-tech users (ideal for rural students)
  • Provides scholarship updates of the First World Countries It simulates real-world deployment and shows how this tool can be life-changing for communities with limited resources.

How we built it

  • Backend: Python Flask server
  • Chatbot/NLP: Google Dialogflow
  • Database: Firebase (Firestore)
  • Messaging Integration: Twilio (for WhatsApp/SMS — simulated)
  • Code & Docs: GitHub (includes architecture, requirements, and README)
  • A detailed use-case and research paper were also created to explain the system, impact, and future rollout plan.

Challenges we ran into

  • Budget constraints: I couldn't deploy Twilio or Firebase live due to cost, so I built a simulated version.
  • Time limitations: Balancing learning backend development and completing everything solo under a short deadline was tough.
  • Background noise during video recording (but the message is still clear!)
  • Personal: I was previously rejected from another hackathon and got scammed out of money — but I used that pain as fuel to keep going.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Created a working prototype and backend
  • Documented an entire simulated deployment system
  • Built something with potential national-level social impact
  • Learned new technologies and stayed focused despite setbacks
  • Turned an idea into a functional research-backed project

What we learned

  • How to build real-world systems using Flask, Dialogflow, Firebase, and Twilio
  • How to write professional documentation and simulate deployment
  • How to record and narrate demo videos under pressure
  • That great ideas can start from small places with no budget — just motivation

What's next for ThePacificEdu – AI Chatbot for Underserved Learners

  • Add voice input/output for visually impaired learners
  • Link with Bangladesh's national curriculum (NCTB content)
  • Gamify quizzes and learning progress
  • Partner with NGOs and schools for pilot testing
  • Apply for funding or scholarships to deploy the chatbot publicly

ThePacificEdu is more than a chatbot — it’s a mission to bring digital equity and empowerment to those who need it most.
