✨ Inspiration For many Nigerian university students, the gap between the classroom and a corporate career feels like a canyon. While the ambition is there, the structured guidance—knowing who to network with, how to translate coursework into resume bullets, or how to stay accountable—is often missing. We built TheNextMe to serve as the mentor that never sleeps, specifically tailored to the nuances of the Nigerian and African job market.

🚀 What it does TheNextMe is an AI-powered career accountability partner. It doesn’t just give you a to-do list; it understands your university, your course, and your target companies to act as a proactive coach.

AI Career Coach: A Claude-powered conversational interface that provides specific advice for the local job market.

Goal-to-Roadmap Engine: Automatically breaks down a goal (e.g., "Land an internship at a FinTech") into a 6-task structured roadmap with proportional deadlines.

Networking X-Ray: Uses LinkedIn X-Ray search to find real professionals based on the user's field.

Resume AI: Translates academic transcripts into high-impact, ATS-friendly resume bullets.

Proactive Nudging: A background scheduler that monitors inactivity or overdue tasks and sends personalized nudges to keep students on track.

🛠️ How we built it Frontend: Built for a responsive, fast user experience.

AI Engine: Integrated Claude AI for high-reasoning career coaching, outreach drafting, and conversation prep.

Search & Discovery: Utilized SerpAPI for LinkedIn X-Ray searching to find industry professionals.

Backend & Automation: Implemented a background scheduler that polls every 2 hours to generate data-aware nudges.

Logic: Created a "Smart Check-in" system that queries actual database metrics (overdue tasks, unsent drafts) to ensure AI interactions aren't generic, but context-specific.

🧠 Challenges we ran into API Reliability: Ensuring the app remained functional even when Claude or SerpAPI hit rate limits. We built intelligent fallback systems with scripted responses and mock profile generation to maintain a seamless UX.

Translating Academics: Developing a prompt engineering strategy that could accurately turn Nigerian university coursework into quantifiable resume bullets that global recruiters recognize.

The "Nudge" Logic: Balancing the frequency of notifications so they are helpful career "pushes" rather than annoying spam.

🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of Contextual Awareness: The app doesn't just know "Business"; it knows the difference between studying at UNILAG vs. UI and how that impacts networking.

The Resume Translator: Successfully building a tool that helps students see their own value by quantifying their coursework.

📖 What we learned We learned the importance of "Grounding" AI. An AI coach is only as good as the data it sees. By feeding the AI specific user metrics (task completion rates, active goals), we moved from a generic chatbot to a truly personalized experience.

🔮 What's next for TheNextMe Direct Mentorship Integration: Allowing students to book calls directly with the professionals discovered in the "Network" tab.

Peer Circles: Creating "Goal Squads" where students with similar roadmaps can keep each other accountable.

Offline Mode: Optimizing for low-data environments to ensure students in areas with unstable internet can still access their roadmaps.
