Inspiration

This problem genuinely resonates with us as we all have different learning styles and different approaches to learning and studying. Each place has a different teaching style, sometimes only catering towards one particular learning group like using strictly lectures, or sometimes hands-on experiments with no notes. We realized that us, as high school students, we all have one common problem. We all learn differently. There is no “right” way to study, everyone has a unique style. So, we decided to bring awareness to some of the types! This is why we created TheLearningJoint, to help teach people how to study in the best way possible for each individual person.

What it does

So our website offers a quiz with real life questions that help us evaluate whether a person is more a visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or a reading/writing learner. Once you get results from this quiz, you can go to the different learning types to learn more about other learning styles as well as yours. You can also post in the discussion board to give your opinion as well as see what other people think. This is extremely helpful for people struggling with what to do and wanting to gain advice from other people! Finally, you can go to different learning environments to study in an environment best fit for you.

How we built it

We built it using HTML, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript. We used different languages to get the webpage, formatting, and the quiz to work. We also used open source widgets.

Challenges we ran into

The quiz was a real struggle, considering some of us didn’t know how to work with PHP, so we spent a lot of time getting the quiz to work, and then taking that data and using it to see what the user’s learning style is also took time to fix. It was also really challenging making the website look graphically appealing, but we figured that out learning more about HTML and CSS!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our group members learning how to use HTML, CSS, and PHP in such a short time to create this, and we are proud of the idea behind it and how impactful and beneficial our solution is when trying to improve people's learning techniques.

What we learned

We learned that under a fast deadline, the project has to be something you really love, because it’s a large amount of work even for four people. Otherwise, you’re just wasting time. Additionally, you have to be willing to learn and take on work you’ve never attempted before. Before this experience, there were so many things each of us didn’t know how to do–and probably would’ve never learned. We had to watch tutorials just to work on some of the more complex stuff. We also learned a lot more about html widgets, css, php, and js.

What's next for TheLearningJoint

While working on this project, each of us found our own calling on the team. We bonded immensely and genuinely gained love for this project of ours. While we were given a short time period during the Hackathon, we would love to make this a living breathing site on the internet as each of us have had an experience with the lack of learning inclusivity. Our team is planning to stay in touch and get it even more polished, along with contact resources and even more features.
