Inspiration
We are concerned about the global warming and all those games which require a lot of CPU's consumptions (No Code, huge databases, enormous servers ...) So we decided to make an environment friendly video game.
What it does
Our game is a puzzle game, where the player has to cross rooms as faster he can, in every rooms, there are traps which slow the player.
How we built it
The game has been entierly built with the Python's programming language. It doesn't use any 2D engine, because we made our own. Our aim was to limit CO2 emissions by using very few CPU's capacities. So the fastest you play, the less you energy consume. Also, TheCube requires some Python's modules, the main of them is PyGame.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we had was to devlop an original 2D puzzle game from scratch with only using Python and few modules.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We had started this game for the hackathon, but the devlopment went so well that we had posted the game on Steam, and guess what ? Steam reviewed our code and accepted it !
What we learned
We learned that is possible (but not so easy) to make an aesthetics, simple, and funny game based on low power consumption technlogies (only Python, with small modules)
What's next for TheCube
We provide to rebuild the game with C++11 to make TheCube faster and to more improve a better CO2 efficiency. Now, at every hundred downloads, we will plant one chestnut tree in Limousin, France.
