Inspiration

I used to struggle with reading long articles just to find out the basic facts—what happened, when, who was involved, why it mattered, where it took place, and how it all unfolded. It often felt like a chore to sift through endless details to get to the important points.

Then I learned about the 5Ws and 1H technique, a method used in journalism and investigations to summarize stories by answering six key questions: What, Who, Why, When, Where, and How. This approach helps reporters and investigators quickly get to the heart of a story, covering all the essential details in a clear and simple way.

What it does

Inspired by this technique, I created the extension 5Ws1H to make it easy for you to get the key facts from any article quickly. The5Ws1H is a based on a hybrid approach generating the 5Ws1H summary remotely using LLM powered by Gemini and enriching the summary with a full text summary (generated by in-device Summarization API) and translated 5Ws1H summary (generated by in-device Translation API). The extension benefits from other helpful features like:

  • Define the name: which retrieves basic information and the picture of People/Companies...etc. (Who) and Places (Where) to provide additional information about the article.
  • History: all summarized articles are saved in a list separately for direct access.
  • Settings: to tune the experience (especially for In-Device capabilities) based on your likings.

Challenges we ran into

Because of the experimental status of the In-Device AI capabilities for Google Chrome, currently the additional features are not accessible to everyone (You would need Canary Version of Chrome + some tweaking of the settings to get access to the AI Capabilities). In addition to that, the in-device features are still unreliable and slow.

What's next for The5Ws1H

The plan is to go fully In-Device, waiting for the Prompt API to be stable and add the functionality to get structured responses. With this change the summary could be fully generated (Text and 5Ws1H) in-device and quickly saving resources and time while keeping a more complex functionality to the remote side of the extension (RAG Implementation - index and answer questions about articles).
