❄️ The Winter’s Hearth

Inspiration

The Winter’s Hearth was inspired by the warmth and nostalgia of winter villages, places where friends gather around a fire, snowflakes fall gently through pine trees, and every corner feels alive with cozy magic. We wanted to create a social world that captures the spirit of togetherness: a snowy island where players can relax, explore, play, and connect through simple but meaningful winter activities.

What it does

The Winter’s Hearth is a social world set on a charming frozen island filled with cozy cabins, warm fire pits, clothing shops, and fun minigames. Players can explore the snowy landscape, learn new dance moves with Eldur, our AI-driven NPC, challenge friends to games like dart throwing, or simply sit together by the fire and enjoy the ambiance. Players also have access to a custom emote wheel featuring fun and lively animations. You can slide down a sledding hill, engage in playful snowball fights, discover hidden paths, and customize your look with winter-themed outfits. The world encourages relaxation, friendship, and shared moments.

How we built it

We created The Winter’s Hearth using Meta Horizon Worlds tools, focusing on atmosphere and interactive social design. Snow shaders, lighting, and particle effects to achieve a warm-cold contrast that feels magical. Also the Eldur’s interactive behavior, and all environmental interactions.
Clothing items, props, and terrain elements where designed with care to enhance the cozy aesthetic.

Challenges we ran into

Optimizing a large snowy outdoor environment featuring multiple interactive systems and minigames presented significant challenges, particularly in balancing performance with demanding visual effects such as snow particles, warm lighting, and custom animations. The development of the Cosmetic Shop Interface also required substantial effort. Additionally, implementing the AI-driven NPC Eldur and crafting a deep, cohesive personality for him introduced an extra layer of technical and narrative complexity.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a social space where players genuinely enjoy spending time together, laughing, exploring, and relaxing. Eldur’s AI crazy dance lessons became a community favorite, and the sledding and snowball areas sparked spontaneous player interactions.

What we learned

We learned how to design warm, emotionally engaging spaces even within cold, expansive environments. We also improved our skills in performance optimization, atmosphere creation, and interactive NPC design.

What's next for The Winter’s Hearth

We plan to add new winter shops, seasonal events, cooperative challenges, and expanded exploration areas, including secret caves, frozen lakes, and new dances taught by Eldur. Our goal is to turn The Winter’s Hearth into a living winter festival that evolves throughout the year, also adding new emotes to unlock and new places to explore.
