How I built it## Inspiration
My inspiration for 'Violet Curse' came from a deep love of high-fantasy epics and East Asian folklore, particularly the visual storytelling seen in the Yin Yang films. I wanted to tell a story centered on a complex, tragic relationship—two sisters (or inseparable friends) forced onto opposing paths by destiny and sacrifice.
The core idea was a visual and thematic contrast: the cold, desolate, and corrupting power of the 'Violet Curse' versus the vibrant, living, and ancient magic of the natural world, represented by the Forest Guardian. The entire narrative is built on the question: What is the right choice when all options are terrible?
How I Built This Project
This trailer was created using a combination of specific AI tools, brought together with traditional film editing.
- Storyboarding & Shot List: I started with a clear narrative. I broke the story down into key beats: the initial 'Violet Curse' title, the ominous oracle, the '1 year later' reveal of the sister in red, the meeting of the two sisters ("This is our destiny"), the red-robed sister's corruption, and the blue-robed sister's quest.
- Iterative Video Generation: Each shot was iteratively prompted and generated using Veo 3.1 Fast. I focused heavily on character consistency (the red vs. blue robes), specific magical effects (the purple 'curse' energy vs. the green 'nature' magic), and dynamic camera-like movements (e.g., the woman running through the forest, the leap in the snow).
- Original Score & Voice: The entire audio landscape is original. I used ElevenLabs to generate the critical lines of dialogue. More importantly, I also used Gemini to help me write the lyrics and generate the vocals for the main song, creating a custom score that aligns perfectly with the story's emotional beats.
- Editing & Pacing: I assembled the hundreds of generated clips in DaVinci Resolve. This is where the story, visuals, and original music truly came together. The pacing was critical, aligning the visual cuts with the beats of the music and narration to build tension and emotional weight.
What I Learned
This project was a massive learning experience in the craft of AI filmmaking. I learned that prompting for emotion is the hardest, yet most important, part, both visually and audibly.
It's not just about describing a scene for Veo, but about describing a feeling. Similarly, it's not just about writing lyrics for ElevenLabs, but about prompting for a vocal tone that conveys tragedy and epic scale. The biggest lesson was in the synergy of these tools. By creating both the video and the score from scratch, I could ensure they were perfectly in sync, creating a far more cohesive and impactful emotional experience.
Challenges I Faced
My biggest challenges were technical and creative, spanning both video and audio.
- Creating the Original Song: Instead of searching for music, I chose to create it entirely with ElevenLabs. This was a huge challenge. It involved not just writing lyrics that fit the narrative, but also iterating countless times to prompt ElevenLabs to generate vocals with the correct epic, emotional, and tragic tone to carry the story. Getting the pacing and feel of the song to build and swell at the exact right moments to match the visual cuts was a complex process.
- Movement and Emotion with Veo: My other main hurdle was getting Veo 3.1 Fast to generate the correct movement to embrace feeling and emotion. In a fantasy concept with "unreal" elements like magic and monsters, AI can struggle to create motion that feels natural and emotionally resonant. Getting the subtle "I had no choice" look of despair, or the fluid motion of the monk opening a portal, required countless re-generations and creative editing to piece together the shots that truly worked.
What's Next for The Violet Curse
This trailer is a proof-of-concept for a much larger narrative I have mapped out. My ambition is to develop 'The Violet Curse' into a full narrative short film or an episodic miniseries.
Winning the Chroma Awards would be an incredible catalyst, but regardless, the next step is to expand this world significantly. I plan to develop more characters, explore new worlds, and fully answer the story's most critical questions:
- The devastating backstory of why the first sister had to embrace the curse. What was the exact threat to her people?
- The deep, personal history between the two sisters, to make their inevitable confrontation even more tragic and powerful.
- The full "hero's journey" for the second sister. This includes developing new supporting characters (allies like the monk, mentors, and new villains) and exploring new worlds and realms—like the forest of the Guardian and the corrupted lands—as she seeks a cure.
- The true nature of the 'Violet Curse' and the central question: Can the corrupted sister be saved, or is she lost forever?
Using Veo and ElevenLabs, I want to push the boundaries of AI filmmaking even further. My focus will be on creating longer, more complex sequences, including epic battle scenes between the forces of the curse and the guardians of nature. I will also be refining the subtle emotional performances and composing an expanded, original score to carry the entire narrative. This project is the first chapter, and I am incredibly excited to tell the rest of the story.
