Inspiration

As a group, we were inspired to create a game that could help distract people from the stress and mental toll brought upon them by the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 has had an everlasting impact in all of our lives and this game is our way of creating a positive spin on the tough times that we are all going through. Additionally, all four of us grew up playing Flash games, so this project was our homage to our childhoods and how much fun we would have sitting in front of computers playing flash games.

What it does

In the game we control a vaccine that is able to shoot doses at incoming Covid-19 particles. There are platforms that our character can use to move around, it also introduces strategy for our characters. The Covid particles will shoot toward our character while we can aim and fire back.

How we built it

For the code, we used the Unity game engine using C#. The sprites were created through Photoshop CS6.

Challenges we ran into

Building the swing mechanic was quite difficult for us. Being new to game development, we did not understand some of the nuances of the physics/math methods built into the Unity engine. However, we did accomplish our sought out mechanic through asking fellow developers through “StackOverFlow” and watching other Youtube videos.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of overcoming the numerous bugs and glitches that we encountered during the building process of this project. We implemented a rope swing feature that truly enhanced the game by opening up many more possibilities for our character other than moving left, right, up and down.

What we learned

Through this experience we learned the importance of both team communication and asking for help. We also learned that working off of each other’s strengths was better than working on everything together, since it was a more efficient means to get to our end goal.

What's next for The Vaccine

We posted The Vaccine on simmer.io to hopefully reach a wider audience. We could add new levels to the game where there are new strains of the Covid particles that are more resistant to the vaccine and may take more doses. At the end of the day, we just wanted to make a fun game, so there is no real goal for us other than hopefully making someone smile.
