Inspiration
The series is inspired by small-town mysteries, surreal detective stories, and the feeling that everyday objects can hold hidden meaning. We wanted to build a town where the strange is quiet, constant, and ignored by most except two detectives who refuse to look away.
What it does
The Unnatural Order of Small Things follows Inspector Nell Briar and Detective Riff as they investigate subtle disturbances in Bellhaven: shifting signs, odd patterns, missing time, and clues that point to Nell’s lost brother, Ludo. Each episode uncovers a new piece of the town’s hidden history and the Spiral Cult behind it.
How we built it
We wrote the scripts with ChatGPT, created storyboards with Midjourney, animated visuals with LumaLabs (Ep. 1), Runway (Ep. 2 using Act-1, Act-2, and manual lipsync), ImagineArt (Ep. 3), and used Hedra for lipsync. We combined everything with original sound created with Suno and traditional editing. The animation style blends painterly surrealism.
Challenges we ran into
Time was our biggest challenge. We aimed to release a new episode every month while also experimenting with longer, more complex storytelling which pushed our limits. Character consistency, lipsync accuracy, and keeping the world coherent across episodes were also demanding. We had to work hard to fit the mystery, the feelings, and the world-building into such short episodes.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a clear world, strong detective duo, and a growing mystery around Ludo and the Spiral Cult. We also managed to create a consistent tone across episodes while experimenting with different animation techniques. The reactions to "The Unnatural Order of Small Things" have been very positive.
What we learned
We learned that small details create the strongest atmosphere. Emotional beats work best when we keep things simple. And building a world takes structure, but also the freedom to adapt when the story surprises us.
What's next for The Unnatural Order of Small Things
More strange events in Bellhaven, deeper clues about Ludo’s condition in the mirror world, and rising tension with the Spiral Cult. Future episodes will reveal how Nell and Riff move from quiet disturbances to real danger and who in Bellhaven can actually be trusted.
