Inspiration
This device was inspired by the simple need to protect our homes.
How Does it Work?
This device is meant to detect if a person comes within a certain range of your front door, and if so, to immediately notify anyone in the home via LED lights and an alarm. We implemented an ultrasound sensor using arduino, which would light a green LED light for any motion within 50 cm, a yellow LED light for any motion within 20 cm, and a red LED light within 12 cm. We also implemented a PIR sensor to detect levels of infrared heat coming from any perpetrator. If the ultrasound sensor picks up motion with 12 cm and high heat levels from the digital read of the PIR sensor, the piezo alarm will ring.
What Did We Learn?
The main challenges we ran into revolved around the PIR sensor because it was a sensor we'd never worked with before. It took quite a bit of research and trial and error in order to understand how it functions. In addition, we had some trouble adjusting the distance measurements for our ultrasound sensor, which again just took some trial and error. Nevertheless, it was exciting to go through the process and to learn how to combine the readings of two different sensors for some meaningful output.
