Inspiration

We were inspired at first by the idea of turning a regular chair into some type of cycle. This led to us thinking about the use of peddles as an easier way for wheelchair users to traverse their environment while being more engaged and interactive. One teammate was particularly inspired by her own family members, wanting to create something that would help in the lives of her grandparents and loved ones.

What it does

The Tri Trekker is a wheelchair attachment with peddles and a steering system that provides an alternative form of exercise and mobility for wheelchair users.

How we built it

Using OnShape as our CAD platform of choice, as well as GrabCAD for certain imports, we designed the parts making up the attachment then put them together in an assembly.

Challenges we ran into

As beginners to both OnShape and CADing in general, there were many technical difficulties that we ran into. Some were solved with a quick google search, others still remain unsolved till submission. Furthermore, the tight time-constraint made it so that many of our further ideas remain in the works. We hope to polish these ideas in the future to make this a viable product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Seeing the final CAD design come together as an actual finished product, despite all of the struggles we faced along the way stands as a great accomplishment in our books. We're proud of the research that went into the design as well!

What we learned

Other than the many technical tips and tricks we learned from fiddling with OnShape and from the workshops, we feel like as a team, our communication and compromising skills have been put to the test with this CADathon.

What's next for The Tri Trekker

The future of the Tri Trekker is very bright. There are so many things we could improve for the design in terms of realistically manufacturing it, ease-of-use, and presentability of our ideas. We hope to be able to round The Tri Trekker more further down the line.
