Inspiration
Going into the Hackathon, the team wanted to follow along and make an application that followed and incorporated the theme of the event. The subject was revealed to be Biomes/Into the Unknown and the team agreed unanimously that a game would be the most fun for this subject (although none of us had any experience with game development, now is the time to learn!). Therefore, similar to the original Super Mario Bros, it has easy controls and friendly user interface allow for a fun 2D platformer that anyone can play.
What it does
- User can use buttons A, D, and spacebar to traverse through pre-generated map
- User can use buttons Q and E to cycle through different abilities to pass through varying obstacles that impede finish
How we built it
- Used Unity Game Engine
- Learned C# language syntax in order to implement C# scripts in Unity
Challenges we ran into
- Setting up the required programs for the production of the application
- Understanding and implementing physics based movements along with the collision between the game objects
- Learning C# Programming Language and syntax
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Learned C# and how to use the Unity Game Engine with little to no prior game development experience between all team members
- Handmade Graphics
- Figured out the physics based movement: falling through the ground, jumping, and interactions between all objects
What we learned
- Physics based movement
- C# Scripting and C# Language Skills
- Unity Game Engine Developing Skills
- Developed Handmade Pixel Art and converted them into useable sprites in the Game Engine
What's next for The Tree, The Pufferfish, and The Boulder?!?
We are planning on expanding the game to having larger and more difficult levels along with more abilities and interactions between the environment, especially because the idea of the game is interesting and new
