Inspiration

An average size tree produces enough oxygen in one year to keep a family of four breathing. Trees contribute to mental wellbeing, provide more healthy environments and are known to reduce anxiety levels. Trees are the miracle workers of our world and yet deforestation is at an all time high with over 6000 square meters of forest being cut down every second! It is estimated that within 100 years there will be no rainforest left and by 2050 3.6 million people will be dying per year because of air pollution. This heartbreaking news is what prompted us to create the Tree Challenge. It is well known that long term change stems from the way we educate our children and the next generation. The tree challenge will be just that, a way to bridge parental education with a gamified challenge for kids to plant real trees across Canada and compete with their classmates and school for points to win a grand prize at the end of their school year. But we all know, the real prize will be the little sustainable habits they will begin to forge as they compete.

What it does

The Tree Challenge is a way to bridge parental education with a gamified challenge for kids to plant real trees across Canada and compete with their classmates and school for points to win a grand prize at the end of their school year. The way it will accomplish this is by providing a 3-way platform that will link parents, their kids and the participating schools (along with their teachers). Parents will run the application and create / choose out of a list of weighted sustainable chores, tasks or habits that they will then task to their participating child. The child will then complete his list and as each task is done, they will gain progress points and when the tree displayed on their app is luscious, they will be prompted to “plant the tree”. They will then be able to select the real location of where an actual tree will be planted because of their sustainable actions! This will earn them points towards their classroom leaderboards and will make them feel like they are making a real difference in the world! At the end of the year the schoolboard will award the classrooms that planted the most trees with a well-deserved award that will be both fun and make the children and parents proud!

How we built it

This application was build using react hooks, a language that was released just 4 days prior to this hackathon. We always strive to use the newest tech to make the most efficient and cutting-edge tools. We used firebase firestore real-time API, zite API, Google Cloud Platform and GitLab.

Challenges we ran into

The challenges we ran into were the conceptual issues with designing a tool that would both educate children and be fun for them to use.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of the fact that this is something that could be deployed in the real world and would be viable to educate the next generation on these issues all the while making an impact.

What we learned

We learned react hooks and best practices in gamification.

What's next for The Tree Challenge

The next steps for the Tree Challenge are partnering with a schoolboard to implement this tool in the first set of schools and testing the efficiency of the platform to educate children. The goal of this is to create a realistic and environmentally focused not-for-profit organization.
