Motivation

With borders open again, travelling is a huge rage now. Called 'revenge travel', the intrinsic desire in people to travel after 2 years of closed borders is fiery. We are no different. After a recent holiday trip, we felt that tourists' travel experiences could be made even better: Imagine if you had an additional companion, ready to assist and enhance your trip. That would be amazing! We wished we had one. That's why we strongly relate to the theme "Re-defining the Post-Pandemic Traveling Landscape", and hence created The Traveller - packed with features that would help travel!

What it does

The Traveller, a website and a telegram bot, is here to accompany you for the whole time, even before you pack your luggage.

Pre-travel: The Traveller's website helps you with setting your sights on where to go! Based on prompts, like the user's character type, budget, and duration of the trip, it then suggests potential destinations for the user to consider, complete with a detailed itinerary, as well as highlights like good food, deals and souvenirs!

On Holiday: Use the telegram bot @the_traveller_bot, ready to help you anytime, anywhere! Can't read a sign in another language? Simply snap a photo and The Traveller utilises OCR to extract the text from the image in order to translate it to English using Google Translate API. Reflect on each day of the trip by writing a journal at the end of the day to your assistant.

  • As sensitive information may be provided by the user, a benefit of using Telegram is that chats and comunications are encrypted.

Back to reality: Shag? But fret not, relive your trip by reviewing your complete journal on your exciting trip!

How we built it

We built The Traveller website with HTML, CSS and Javascript. Telegram Bot was developed with Python.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered difficulties with implementing some features. For example, we intended for the Telegram Bot to send a reminder to record their journal for the day at 10pm (or as customised) if the user had not submitted a journal yet. This is our first time creating a telegram bot and we are not sure of what we could do.

We created our own dataset for each country as it was difficult to automatically obtain detailed data pertaining to each country. We browsed and web scraped from various sources like TripAdvisor, Wikipedia, TasteAtlas. Also, The Traveller assists with generating itineraries of up to 10 days only, due to a limitation in dataset available and according to research, the ideal length of a holiday is around 8 days.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Excited that we were able to create The Traveller to assist people in planning and enjoying their next holiday!

What we learned

Stuck? Errors? Take a break/eat food/shower and come back again later. The solution will magically come to your mind.

Anyway, we are glad to have gained experience in developing a website as well as building a Telegram Bot. We will most certainly use our newly acquired skills to not only make The Traveller even better, but also go on to develop more products to enhance people's lives.

What's next for The Traveller

  • Make the most out of your buck. Assist users to search for flights based on price, travel class and preferred airlines. Helps to match customers to airlines.
  • Suggest other modes of travel if the user is up for it, e.g. road trips, hiking
