What if we took the concept of 'Thrift Stores' and put a sustainable spin on it? Introducing the Trash Shop, a thrift store like no other that collects waste items and breathes new life into them!

Inspiration

Inspired by the concept of thrift stores, instead of revamping and selling used items like clothes and accessories, The Trash shop does the exact same thing but with waste instead.

What it does

The Trash Shop is a sustainable e-commerce and in-person store that utilises green technologies and Artificial Intelligence to provide a modern, creative take on waste management. The Trash Shop uses computer vision powered sorting technologies to efficiently seggregate waste brought in by customers. The different categories of waste produced are utilised for various sustainable practice whether its the micro solar-powered greenhouses, the AI controlled smart compost boxes or the interactice Art from Waste sessions which can booked for events like weddings, birthdays and much more! The Trash Shop will also be accompanied by an AI driven app which optimises the customer experience, provides loyalty rewards and utilises customer feedback and practices to optimise sustainability practices and predict programs that might draw in more consumers.

How I built it

I created a prototype website on Wix that incorporate three main features of The Trash Shop:

  1. Programs- Such as Art from Waste, renting a micro-greenhouse and growing your own plants in compost created by your own waste, Waste restoration programs such as creating jewellery from metal scraps and many more programs ideas that are yet in development.
  2. E-commerce- The Trash Shop's store filled with products like stationary, clothing etc are all products of the waste donated by customers. These products will all be sustainably produced and manufactured with the help of AI and machine learning. The revenue produced through the shop would provide funding for renewable energy and electric powered vehicles
  3. Events- The Trash Shop's services can be booked for events like weddings, parties, fundraisers etc. An example of how the Trash shop's services would come into play for such an event has been attached in a google document here. ## Challenges I ran into While I had a basic idea of what this Shop would achieve, I had to look into how technology could play a part in sustainability as well as how feasible the idea actually is. ## Accomplishments that we're proud of Developing a protoype website that can later be programmed into a functioning app Identifying a problem in soceity and creating a meaningful and potentially sucessful solution for it. ## What we learned I learnt alot about the role that AI and other related technologies can play in optimising and increasing the impact of sustainable practices. I also learnt a lot about how businesses function and what draws consumers into utilising a company's products. ## What's next for The Trash Shop The next step would be to develop a fully functioning app that involves AI powered chatbots and waste pick up services. Further research would also be done into the functioning of the Computer vision sorters, the smart compost boxes and the micro solar powered greenhouses.
