Inspiration
We got inspiration for this project because we are both learning new languages and we found the classes to be pretty boring. We thought that if we made a fun game that could teach languages, more kids like us would be interested in the culture of the language and the language itself.
What it does
Our code is a game where you earn coins by recognizing and typing the answer in the language chosen. You can use the coins to buy things in the shop, and customize your home. There are neighbors around and the whole game is designed in ancient China. Also, the portal is for the player to get to the menu screen, and once we add different languages, they can go and change their language on the menu screen.
How we built it
We used a lot of broadcasts for the animations and a lot of costumes were used. We carefully designed each backdrop and costumes so that it fit the theme of our game. We put a timer into the game and designed a coin system.
Challenges we ran into
So first we wanted to put a speech to text extension in our project for the game, but we couldn't find a good one. We had to resort to typing, which meant using only pinyin because Mandarin characters have to be written with a special keyboard and most players don't have it. We also ran into a problem- dubbing the flashcards. Our code is a next costume code, so we had to go one by one, adding the dubbing with if statements.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we made the whole code work smoothly, no errors(in our trials). The backdrops and the costumes are intricate and inside the home the furniture has an intricate feeling. We added ancient China culture in and we are proud of it.
What we learned
We learned how to use a lot of broadcasts how to make all of the code run smoothly and look good, and how to design 3d things on Scratch.
What's next for the Tower of Babel
We plan to add more dialogue, add more characters and shop items, as well as add more different languages. Our next goal is to put English and its culture in the game. We also plan to get rid of any possible bugs and add more music options.
