The Moroccan caftan has always been more than clothing — it’s a living archive of history, craftsmanship, and identity. I wanted to use AI to give this heritage a new form, to make old fabrics breathe again and tell their story in a modern way. The project was inspired by the idea that tradition and innovation can coexist beautifully.

What it does

The Thread Across Time is a short AI-based poetic video that blends real Moroccan footage, historical imagery, and AI-generated animations. It transforms static heritage into living motion — showing how cultural diversity, beauty, and technology can merge to preserve Morocco’s legacy for future generations.

How we built it

I used a mix of real video and AI tools:

Nano Banana (Gemini 2.5) to generate mannequin visuals wearing traditional caftans.

Kling AI and Veo 3 to animate the stills and fabrics.

After Effects and CapCut AI for composition, effects, and final editing. Arabic narration and English subtitles were added to make the message accessible globally.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was finding balance — preserving cultural authenticity while experimenting with AI visuals. It was also difficult to animate traditional fabrics naturally and keep the caftan’s beauty intact. Managing time and rendering speed before the submission deadline was another challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m proud of transforming real Moroccan heritage into an artistic, AI-driven narrative — especially as a young creator representing Moroccan culture globally. The project shows that technology can help protect and celebrate cultural identity instead of replacing it.

What we learned

I learned how AI tools can become creative partners — not just generators. I also discovered how visual storytelling can communicate cultural diversity more powerfully than words. Most importantly, I learned how heritage can inspire innovation.

🌍 What's next for The Thread Across Time

I plan to expand the project into a longer short film or interactive exhibition, featuring artisans, regional styles, and AI-enhanced educational visuals. My goal is to build a digital archive where Moroccan crafts are preserved and shared worldwide.
