Inspiration
As a remote worker juggling multiple projects, I grew frustrated with one-size-fits-all pomodoro timers that ignored my energy dips and packed calendar. I wanted a tool that didn’t just count minutes, but adapted—rooted in the reality of how real people work, not just productivity dogma.
What it does
The Thinking Pomodoro Timer uses AI to create personalized daily focus plans, adjusts session lengths based on energy levels, tracks interruptions (and their cost), and delivers actionable analytics like Focus Score ($\text{Focus Score} = (\text{Completed Sessions}/\text{Planned Sessions})×0.4 + (\text{Total Deep Work Hours}/\text{Target Hours})×0.4 + (1 - \text{Interruption Rate})×0.2$) to boost deep work.
How we built it
We started with core React/Node.js scaffolding, integrated Firebase for cloud sync, and wired up Google Calendar/Slack APIs for scheduling and status management. We built custom AI logic for session adaptation and used PostgreSQL to track session data, then designed a distraction-free UI with dark mode support.
Challenges we ran into
Flow state detection was tough—balancing accurate activity tracking with non-intrusive monitoring took weeks of testing. API integration bugs (e.g., Slack status reverting mid-session) required robust error handling, and aligning AI session recommendations with real user energy patterns needed iterative user testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our Focus Score metric gives users clear, actionable insights into their productivity. We nailed the adaptive session logic—users report 30% more completed deep work hours, and the ambient sound integration creates a seamless focus environment.
What we learned
We learned that "productivity tools" succeed when they prioritize empathy over rigidity. AI works best when it augments, not replaces, human judgment. Also, third-party API reliability requires redundant fallback systems (e.g., silent mode if ambient sounds fail).
What's next for This project
We’re adding mobile web optimization (native apps are on the roadmap), expanding integrations to project management tools, and refining the Dopamine Audit to include real-time task fulfillment tracking. We also plan to test predictive burnout detection to proactively adjust session plans.
