Inspiration

The Terrifying Blue Star was inspired by the 130th anniversary of the birth of cinema in 2025. I wanted to use this milestone as an opportunity to create an AI-generated short film as a tribute to human imagination and creativity. At its core, the film carries the message that imagination and creativity are humanity’s most powerful and unique strengths.

What it does

The short film follows interstellar pirate Lemoore and his mercenary crew after their crushing defeat on planet Tark. In desperate need of an easy target, they set their sights on the “blue star” of the Solar System — Earth. With their ship’s probe destroyed, Lemoore relies on data retrieved from the Voyager 3 spacecraft to learn about humans. But what he discovers only escalates the fear and paranoia aboard his ship…

How we built it

I used a full AIGC pipeline to bring this story to life: Concept & Scriptwriting: Developed the script and storyboard with ChatGPT. Visual Design: Created consistent character and scene art using Vidu’s asset library, supplemented by Nano banana for additional imagery. Animation: Generated video segments with Keling, using Jidream to create smooth, continuous long shots by generating start and end frames. Post-Production: Edited and composited the footage in CapCut, then used DaVinci Resolve for color grading and special effects to give the film a cinematic finish.

Challenges we ran into

Ensuring visual consistency across characters, props, and scenes was one of the biggest challenges, especially when using multiple AIGC tools with different generation styles. Maintaining narrative coherence while balancing technical limitations of frame generation also required careful iteration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of successfully combining multiple AI tools into a cohesive workflow that resulted in a polished, visually engaging short film. The seamless blending of still-frame generation, long-shot continuity, and post-production effects was a major creative milestone.

What we learned

This project taught me how to coordinate different AIGC platforms efficiently, refine prompt engineering for consistent character design, and balance creative storytelling with technical feasibility. I also learned how to iterate quickly based on visual outputs and adapt the narrative to fit what AI tools could produce most effectively.

What's next for The Terrifying Blue Star

I plan to expand the story into a longer episodic series, exploring more of Lemoore’s adventures and humanity’s unexpected responses to his plans. I also want to experiment with voice generation and sound design powered by AI to enhance immersion, as well as explore real-time generation tools for faster production cycles.
