Inspiration

With the rise of COVID, spikes in outdoor activities has risen, with more and more trash being put out into our planet! The Sustainers wanted to create a user-friendly website that shows the importance of keeping the environment clean and sustainable. Our goal was to give the community information on how to put an end to the huge amounts of clatter being let out into mother natures beauty . We also wanted create ways for users to engage in a fun and binding learning experience for everyone to enjoy!

What it does

Our website gives resources that are easily accessible to the user so they know what the problem is and how to solve it. With easy navigation, one can maneuver around the website with ease. It also contains two simple games implemented into the website that reinforce what the user has learned throughout their experience.

How we built it

We began by learning the basics of html and css through workshops and long hours of hard work. We worked collaboratively by bouncing ideas off one another through a program called Repl.it. Noticing that we can do more than just build the website, we learned the basics of JavaScript and implemented two simple games onto the website. We also built a navigation bar that allows for the user to operate any page from wherever they are on the website.

Challenges we ran into

I think the biggest challenge that all of us can agree upon is making the two games. We were completely new to JavaScript (we never wrote in JavaScript before!), most of us knew C++ and Java. It was really funny that we were all so hyped over just completing a simple counter on the website, but it was really cool, so by far the two games we made were huge challenges. Another challenge was just trying to learn HTML and CSS, and we did it!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Definitely the JavaScript game. We spent like in total... 5 hours trying to get the games to work. Cris had to stay up until 2 AM to get the questionnaire to function properly. We even made an Instagram post about it! We were all so proud of each other for making this happen.

What we learned

We learned various tags and attributes of HTML and learned how to style them with CSS. This code was really interesting--we wrote hundreds of lines of this code and there was so much to grasp. We also spent hours trying to make the game to work in JavaScript and it finally worked!! We were so happy.

What's next for The Sustainers

Learning 3 different languages in 24 hours was a huge journey for us. We all didn't know much on how to develop a website from the ground up. We not only walk away with skills in programming in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but we also walk away with leadership skills, communication skills, and just skills in being a better teammate. I, Jacob Merioles (Sophomore at Sunny Hills High School), will continue to use these languages to create more websites to build my resume for college and future employers.
